What is the Enneagram?

The simplest explanation is that the Enneagram is a personality test. However, other tests focus mainly on behaviors and how we present ourselves to the world. The Enneagram goes beyond behaviors into the core motivations of why we do what we do. What drives us? What do we fear most? What parts of ourselves do we work the hardest to protect? What elusive idea do we chase after because we unconsciously believe it will bring us peace within ourselves and our relationships?

The Enneagram symbol shows us that there are 9 basic unique perspectives to the world. Though we all share a bit of each number, there is 1 main number from which each person operates. Our behaviors can look the same but for entirely different reasons. Outward behaviors aren’t the determining factors to what is going on internally. The Enneagram can help guide us in providing ourselves with the inner space to observe our thoughts and feelings from a non-judgmental standpoint. This provides us with the knowledge we need to determine our core motivations, and thereby our main number.

The Enneagram is not a static test. Unlike other personality tests that just provide labels for people, the Enneagram lays out a clear growth path for accelerated personal development. Each number deals with a specific core weakness, or vice, and a virtue to work towards. There are patterns of thought and behaviors for each personality type that can appear when under emotional stress or when experiencing growth. As we learn to understand ourselves, strengths and weaknesses alike, we can gain a confidence and grace for ourselves and for others. When we can look for the variety of gifts that others offer and understand the different battles people fight, we can strengthen relationships and live with a more gracious and compassionate view of the world.
